Is That Noise Serious? Common Car Sounds You Should Never Ignore

Owning a car means familiarizing yourself with common car sounds and what they mean. Your car communicates with you in many ways, and weird noises often point to a problem that needs to be addressed. Whether it’s a clicking noise that comes out of nowhere when you turn on the car and then disappears or a persistent one that won’t go away, it’s a good idea to get it checked. Taking action in a timely manner helps you avoid costly repairs and keeps you safe while on the road.

Here at Wright's Car Care, we pride ourselves on offering professional auto repair services in Norcross. For decades, we’ve been providing quality, guaranteed, and budget-friendly car care and repair services. From transmission repair and A/C & heating service to electrical system diagnosis and engine repair, we do it all. Today, we’ll walk you through the common car sounds and what they mean.

  • Squealing or Screeching When Braking

If you hear a high-pitched squeal every time you hit the brakes, it usually means your brake pads are worn down. Modern brake pads contain built-in wear indicators that produce a squeaking sound when they’re near the end of their lifespan. If this issue goes unresolved, the pads can wear down completely and lead to metal-on-metal grinding and damage to your rotors. Brakes are your car’s most important safety system, so squealing should never be ignored.

  • Knocking or Tapping From the Engine

A knocking sound from the engine is one of the most concerning noises you can hear. This often indicates issues with engine bearings, low oil levels, or improper fuel combustion. You should never drive with engine knock, as it can lead to severe internal damage and, in the worst cases, complete engine failure. If you hear rhythmic knocking or tapping, especially when accelerating, stop driving and have the engine inspected by a local auto repair shop.

  • Grinding While Shifting Gears

Grinding noises when shifting gears, whether in a manual or automatic, point to transmission trouble. In manual cars, it may be a worn clutch or synchro issue. In automatics, grinding can be an indication of low transmission fluid or internal damage. Transmission repairs can be expensive, but catching the problem early can prevent a total transmission replacement. Watch out for grinding sounds, and schedule auto repair service before it’s too late.

  • Hissing Under the Hood

A hissing sound usually means air, steam, or fluid is escaping where it shouldn’t. This could be a coolant leak, a cracked hose, or even a vacuum leak affecting your engine’s performance. If the hissing happens right after you turn off your car, it might indicate overheating.

  • Rattling or Clunking While Driving

Loose suspension components, failing shocks, or a damaged exhaust system can all cause rattling or clunking sounds, especially when driving over bumps. While some rattles are minor, others could mean your suspension isn’t securing your vehicle properly. Any unusual movement-related noise should be inspected to avoid safety risks.

What Our Happy Customers Are Saying

My experience with Wrights Car Care was probably the best car repair experience I could ask for. The last thing that you want to worry about while putting yourself through college is whether or not you can trust the people working on your car.  Wrights Car Care was very honest about exactly what the problems were with my vehicle and which issues needed to be addressed immediately and which ones could wait.  I have had no issues with any of the repairs I have had. They really have the customer's best interest in mind and it shows!

Susan Knippenberg

have been going to Wright's for numerous years and David has always been honest and helpful and concerned about each customer and their circumstances.  They always give detailed reports about what needs to be fixed and even a time frame if it can wait a while or needs immediate attention.  I really appreciate that personal attention.

This place is absolute gold. We moved to the neighborhood 3 years ago, and they have been our go-to car place for every issue, large or small, ever since. It's like bringing my car to a trusted and knowledgeable family member. They have done everything from major repairs to minor tune-ups for us, and we have never been dissatisfied. Twice I have brought my car not sure what was going on, and it turned out to be a small enough issue that they fixed it on the spot for no charge! Honest, competent, quick, fair, and kind. You can't do better.

Wrights car care rocks!! I had a car issue with a quick timeline to get back to college. David got me in and out quickly, with the part I needed, and didn't try to sell me something I didn't. You cannot beat the kindness and service I experienced!! We have gone to Wrights Car Care before, and this is why we keep going back. THANK YOU!!
