Strange Noises Under the Hood? How to Describe Sounds to Your Auto Repair Tech

A car making an unusual sound can mean anything. In fact, it's often difficult to decipher the noise - whether it's a squeak, rattle, clicking, knocking, or grinding noise. For many car owners, they often don't know what's causing the unusual sound. Nevertheless, if you can describe the sound clearly, it becomes easier for an auto repair shop to diagnose the problem.

Wrights Car Care is experienced in helping vehicle owners assess unusual vehicle noises and ascertain whether they indicate a minor fault or something that requires immediate attention.

Start by Describing the Type of Sound

The technician can diagnose and repair the fault if he understands the sound. As a car owner, you should describe the sound using familiar words to the auto technician. This can only be achieved by focus and intentional listening.

For instance, a high-pitched squeal will be different from a deep knocking sound. Likewise, a clicking noise could indicate a different fault entirely. However, you shouldn't burden yourself with using technical terms when making your description. An experienced auto repair technician should interpret these descriptions.

Pay Attention to When the Noise Happens

Another thing to consider is what moment you start hearing the sound.

For some sounds, they begin as soon as you perform a key action such as kick-start the engine, accelerate the vehicle, hit the brakes, make a turn, or drive over bumps. In contrast, you may notice that some sounds disappear once the vehicle gets to a certain speed.

Although they may seem insignificant, these details are very important as they would aid the auto repair technician in determining the cause of the problem. For instance, a noise that comes up while turning may direct technicians toward different components compared to one that occurs continuously while driving.

Describe What Makes the Sound Better or Worse

Furthermore, changes in the noise can provide further evidence. Ask yourself: does the sound become louder when you accelerate? Or does it disappear when you release the gas pedal? Perhaps, it pops when turning the steering wheel!

Don’t forget to inform the auto repair technician whether the noise is constant or happens once in a while. No information is insignificant as it may help your technician understand what is happening.

Don't Ignore New or Unusual Noises

Cars often communicate faults in varying ways, and unusual sounds can sometimes be an early indicator. So, you should act fast before the problem worsens and spirals into a more costly repair.

If you're skeptical about whether the noise coming from your vehicle requires attention or not, then you should visit an auto repair shop for clarification.

Provide as Much Information as Possible to the Technician

Be equipped with the right answers when you visit the workshop. Know when the noise started and whether anything changed before you noticed it. In some cases, you can come along with a recording of the strange sound to make it easier for the technician to recognize.

At Wrights Car Care, we understand that strange car noises can be very disturbing. As a car owner, act fast once you notice odd noises coming from your vehicle. The next action should be to drive over to an auto repair shop in Chamblee for an inspection and have the fault fixed on time. Call us whenever you notice a strange noise from your car. Our experienced technician will help you.

What Our Happy Customers Are Saying

My experience with Wrights Car Care was probably the best car repair experience I could ask for. The last thing that you want to worry about while putting yourself through college is whether or not you can trust the people working on your car.  Wrights Car Care was very honest about exactly what the problems were with my vehicle and which issues needed to be addressed immediately and which ones could wait.  I have had no issues with any of the repairs I have had. They really have the customer's best interest in mind and it shows!

Susan Knippenberg

have been going to Wright's for numerous years and David has always been honest and helpful and concerned about each customer and their circumstances.  They always give detailed reports about what needs to be fixed and even a time frame if it can wait a while or needs immediate attention.  I really appreciate that personal attention.

This place is absolute gold. We moved to the neighborhood 3 years ago, and they have been our go-to car place for every issue, large or small, ever since. It's like bringing my car to a trusted and knowledgeable family member. They have done everything from major repairs to minor tune-ups for us, and we have never been dissatisfied. Twice I have brought my car not sure what was going on, and it turned out to be a small enough issue that they fixed it on the spot for no charge! Honest, competent, quick, fair, and kind. You can't do better.
